Ford Drops The Cobra Name?
Posted November 8, 2005 05:56 PM by Curt Gordon.Say it ain't so, Bill!
TheGT500Source.com has issued a release stating that the Cobra moniker will be dropped from the GT500 when it hits the streets, & that the next Cobra (geez, it's gonna be tough to stop saying that) will be named the "Mustang Shelby GT500".
Now, I'm a Cobra owner (wazzup '97 owners, w00t!) & I have to say, I'm sad to see the name get retired. I understand Ford doing this; the latest Mustang is ultra-retro, & they're going to ride the nostalgia wave until we're all sick of new/old cars. In the long run, heck yes, I still want one, though I'll always have a soft spot for the late-model Cobra.

Why in the heck would you drop a name like that! That name means something to the Mustang. I'm buying a 95 Cobra and its a beautiful car. Taking away the name Cobra is like taking away the name Mustang GT or Saleen! I'm a really, and I mean really!!! big mustang fan and I have cherished the Cobra since I was 8.

The cobra name is hardcore...my 95 cobra will never lose its cobra or svt badging. However, im glad the new cars arent called cobras. They ARENT cobras. And when some clown in a gt-500 pulls up next to me, i'll be glad to waste him so he can be jealous my 10 year old car will still hang.

Actually it makes sense since the Cobra was a roadster. Now it would be nice to see the Cobra-Jet return to the engine compartment when the switch occurs.

Why in the world would you want to do a thing like this I think the name cobra is a catchy name for ford mustangs, and what is the point of droping the name Cobra and yes I am also a fan of the mustang car and although im 13 years old I look forward to buying a 95' COBRA when i get older

Come on, it's like the article said. Shelby is the one who made Cobra what it is today. Just having the Shelby GT-500 is all you need to see. At least when I think Shelby I think of the 1967 KR and Cobra. Besides having 9837896 names on a car makes it look over crowded. Having the Shelby name + GT-500 + Cobra emblem is perfect.

Ford should use GT500 for that car, it makes sense as it's a big-displacement, solid rear axle modern musclecar. However it'd be great if they continue the Cobra name & pick up where the '03/'04's left off by building a car with IRS and the blown 4.6L for those of us that want to turn corners as well.

I, for one, am glad to see it. Using the Cobra name for Mustangs has created YEARS of confusion for people who remember and revere the real Cobra, a roadster. When I talk about a Cobra, it is aggrivating for non-car enthusiasts to assume I am talking about a Mustang. They are in no way similar, even different manufacturers, except for the engine.

Sounds like marketing move to me though stupid! But, does Ford have to kiss his a** THAT much?!? It's bad enough having someone else's name draped across the back of your $50k+ car! The Ford dealers will gouge, big-time!
I have one order. When I get my Mustang COBRA (thank you very much), i'm going to remove Shelby's name from the rear and put on - COBRA! The way it should be, IMHO. Nothing against Shelby, of course.
Mustang "Cobra" sounds more intimidating than Mustang "Shelby".

Interesting. Take off Shelby's name and put Shelby's other name (Cobra). And the purpose would be confusion, right?
The Cobra name should be reserved for Cobras. Not Mustangs. The Mustang name is revered worldwide, so why mess with it?
