Back to the Drawing Board for Ford

Posted September 20, 2005 02:32 AM by Tyler Whitemarsh.

When Retro becomes retro, where do you go? You go to a parallel universe where Ford designs cars that don’t put you to sleep.

Don’t get me wrong, the current designs starting to come out of Ford lately are top notch (ok, 50% anyway). The 50% in question are cars that cost 6 figures (Ford GT), revert back to Ford’s roots (2005+ Mustang, or are about to be dropped (Lincoln LS/Mercury Marauder). The other 50% make me sleepy every time I see them. Ford has proven time and time again that they can build great (stylish) trucks and SUVs but with fuel prices soaring and no end in site, it is time for Ford to get it together in the car department.

Dream Team

J. Mays, Martin Smith, and Freeman Thomas. These are names that resonate style in car design. Concept cars aside, these men have been responsible for creating some of the most daring designs to hit showroom floors in the last 20 years. The question is; will Ford let the big dogs rule the yard or will they neuter them right out of the gate like they have done so many others in the past?

This writer is still trying to figure out how the Forty-Nine and 427 never made it to production. Instead we got the Five Hundred (read BORING) and the Freestyle (Who Cares?)

Hopefully these gentlemen will be allowed to turn their pens loose on Lincoln/Mercury as well. It may be to late for the Lincoln LS (discontinued after 2006) but there is still hope for the return of the Continental and Mark series (not the Truck).

Welcome aboard guys! Now get to work!
