Car and Driver recently tested a Ford Shelby GT500 convertible on the open road and gave a somewhat disheartened opinion of the poster child Ford Mustang. Much of the public hype and media glitz about the vehicle's launch and production might have foreshadowed thoughts of a "silver bullet" Ford Mustang that could eliminate the competition, while maintaining composure and style. Tests on acceleration, noise levels, and overall handling were but a few items of scrutiny the GT500 was put through. The immediate impression is that they did not enjoy the car 100% and seemed to think it is overrated by the attention is has received. Do they feel it is completely disappointing? Just in case you might have been caught beneath a rock over this past weekend, the Ford Shelby GT made its way into the limelight, making its presence known quite well as the retail version of the popular Shelby GT-H. What's the big deal, anyway? Well, the big deal is that Ford is listening to its dealers and more importantly, its customers. People have been pining to get their hands on a GT-H and want to get their own stake in the special edition game. As a result, Ford has teamed with Shelby to provide an unconventional and speedy solution to giving the public what it wants: style and speed, pony car style. Just yesterday, we told you about the upcoming twist on the 2007 Ford Mustang: the Ford Shelby GT. Ford has now released what this new Ford Mustang looks like and advises that this 4.6 liter, 325 horsepower pony car will fit a nice niche between the Mustang GT and the Ford Shelby GT500.

Today, Ford confirmed reports that the next variant of the Mustang will be dubbed the 'Shelby GT'. Due out in 2007; The Shelby GT is based on the highly popular GT-H. Anyone can rent the GT-H from selected Hertz rental car stores, but prior to this latest news, owning a GT-H was nearly impossible. According to several reports, the Shelby GT will come in either black or white (both with silver stripes), as well as the same scoops and horsepower of the GT-H. This exciting news comes just in front of the expected Chevrolet Camaro production announcement later this week. Ford's announcement also comes as the Shelby GT-500 starts to hit the streets and while some are waiting for the 2008 BOSS Mustang.

On the 40th Anniversary of the Shelby GT350H Ford Mustang, the Ford Motor Company, the Hertz Corporation, and Shelby Automobiles jointly produced 500 of the reborn GT-H Mustangs with the latest Mustang body style. While 500 were produced, only 499 are going to be up for the rental program. Why? The one remainder was auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson auctioneer "Spanky", Carroll Shelby, and Edsel Ford at the annual "Gathering of Eagles" fundraiser at the EAA AirVenture 2006. The winning bid: $250,000.

In the upcoming September issue of Motor Trend, it is reported that the Boss Mustang is definitely a go for the model year before the Mustang redesign in 2008. That's right, folks--from what has been told, the Boss will be back. Motor Trend is claiming that the powerplant have a 5.0 liter displacement and will produce 390 horsepower. SVT employees explain just how much of a challenge the engine installation was because the GT500 had to be built within the same timeframe as other Mustangs and 5.4 liter engine had never been installed in a Mustang before.
